Live Expanded Cinema Performance

Microscope is very pleased to present for the first time in the US the expanded cinema performance Things Said Once by Spanish artist Esperanza Collado on one of her rare visits to New York.
“Things said once” is a choreographed reading by Collado of her own essay of the same title involving the use of fabricated books, film reels, plants, 35mm slides, and a 16mm film projector, among others. The text represents an ode to cinema “as an experience” and incorporates several quotes from various thinkers and filmmakers stemming from her research on forms of paracinema — as this performance may be considered pertaining to, as well.
“Things Said Once is an art statement and a praise for film and cinema in recognition of its history and our responsibility in the present. Written as a poem, the text is built around an understanding of cinema as experience in its spatial, temporal and communitarian or social dimensions. As a performance, Things Said Once is presented as a reading in an elaborated environment that includes a series of gestures, bodily actions and objects through which the text is revealed.” — Esperanza Collado

Esperanza Collado is a Spanish artist-researcher. Her performance-environments, site-specific works and critical texts investigate the dematerialization of film in art practices, the performativity of writing and the figure of the artist as meta-historian. Often focusing on phenomenological and situational aspects of cinema and projection, her interdisciplinary works explore the conditions and paradoxes of the performative materiality of the film apparatus at the end of the film age. Recent works revolve around the spatial, sculptural, political, social and choreographic dimensions and potentialities of a cinema by other means. Her work has been shown in Hangar.org (Barcelona), Xcèntric (CCCB, Barcelona), Image Forum (Tokyo), Taipei Contemporary Art Center, Bristol Experimental and Expanded Cinema, Temple Bar Gallery (Dublin), Images Festival (Toronto), Palais des Beaux Arts (Brussels), MacVal (Paris), Tabakalera (San Sebastian), CA2M (Madrid), Centro de Arte Digital (Mexico), Biennial of Havana (Cuba), Anthology Film Archives (New York), Lajevardi Foundation (Teheran), etc. Her book ‘Paracinema: la desmaterialización del cine en las prácticas artísticas’, a short version of her Ph.D, won the Spanish national ‘Writings on Art’ prize (Fundación Arte y Derecho) in 2011. She co-founded and managed the editorial project LEVE, releasing 8 records of site-specific field recordings on 45rpm vinyl. As a curator, she presented film programmes at MUSAC (León, Spain) and at the Experimental Film Club in Dublin, which she co-founded in 2008. She also created and ran the arts festival Márgenes’ in Madrid and Dublin. Her art projects have been granted or awarded by The Arts Council of Ireland, Culture Ireland, Artium Museum and MUSAC. She won an annual post-doctoral grant from JCCM to research at Anthology Film Archives in 2009-10 and in 2020, she was on a Fellowship in Taiwan researching expanded cinema in East Asia. Collado lectures at Cuenca Fine Arts College (UCLM) and directs the MA in Performance Practice and Visual Culture at MNCARS Madrid.
