Microscope is pleased to welcome to the gallery sonic front, a long-running series of sound and visual works curated by Jeremy Slater for the evening. This iteration features 3 sets: Plan 23 with visuals by Chris Jordan; Ian Epps; and Gill Arno & Richard Kamerman.

Plan 23 is a group of sound artists, who utilize contemporary advancements in music making to explore the newfound possibilities in sonic composition. The group combines electronic and physical instruments, digital and analog. Chris Jordan provides visuals for the performance.
Ian Epps’ performance is focused on sonic properties hardly perceptible to the human ear, yet experienced by the body and subconscious. His work focuses on psycho-acoustics, calling upon natural rhythms found in human-inhabited environments.
Concentrating on the limitations of instruments and media, Kamerman’s work reveals the sounds, visuals, and emotions resulting from the process of their active destruction. Arno’s work engages sound and light as well as notions of memory, identity, presence and time often through the use of obsolete or hand built machines and apparatuses. The two artists perform together for the first time, with Kamerman contributing live visuals, and Arno sound.

Plan 23 shows are extended, immersive, audio-visual experiences that bend one’s perception of time & space; encompassing a sonic spectrum from dark-ambient via noise, drone to 21st century electronic psychedelic sounds. Chris Jordan explores the medium of light, movement, and time through the use of technology. His installations have appeared at the MoMA, The New Museum, The Whitney Museum, The Museum of Natural History, The Chelsea Museum, Times Square, among others. The common elements that define Jordan’s work include explorations into memory, photography, film, interactivity, and projections. By examining the political and social implications technology has on us through a diversity of media, his work challenges the viewer to redefine perceptions of audience and performer. Jordan co-curated the Figment Sculpture Park on Governors Island in 2012 and 2013; a 4 month interactive sculpture park, visited by over 100,000 people each year. More info at http://www.seej.net/
Ian Epps is a sound artist whose work explores psycho-acoustics and audio phenomena. Through indeterminacy, he combines room tone and feedback to construct densely layered harmonic fields. His compositions have been exhibited in museums and institutions internationally at venues including the Museum of Modern Art, the Walker Art Center, Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, and Carré d’Art – Musée d’art Contemporain (Nîmes, France), among others. He has composed, recorded and performed alongside artists and musicians such as Ann Hamilton, Dara Friedman, Rafael Toral, Mountains, Woody Sullender, Jozef van Wissem, Joe McPhee, and Pauline Oliveros. Richard Kamerman (b. NYC, 1985) has been breaking electronics and crashing computers while trying to coax interesting and unpredictable sounds out of them for over a decade. Keywords: amplification, magnification, obfuscation, systems design, game theory, patterns, human error, accident, failure. Recordings of his solo or collaborative works have been released by Erstwhile Records, Pilgrim Talk, Contour Editions, RRRecords, and Engraved Glass, among others. Kamerman has performed or had his music performed throughout the US as well as internationally in Canada, Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Chile. Gill Arnò is a sound and visual artist. He is known as an electro-acoustic music improviser and as a phonographer, as well as for his project mpld, in which he animates decaying slides to the sound of his modified projectors, here repurposed as an electronic photo-acoustic instrument. Various feedback loops connect the sound to the light, in a performance that drifts between materiality and abstraction, noise and consonance, stasis and transition, subjective account and common place narrative.
